PAJ 2018 Oil Spill Response Workshop
"Recent Major Oil Spill Incident and Future Preparedness"

November 28th, 2018

Petroleum Association of Japan (PAJ)

Title : PAJ 2018 Oil Spill Response Workshop
“Recent Major Oil Spill Incident and Future Preparedness”
Date : November 28th (Wednesday), 2018
Venue : International Convention Hall
2nd Floor, Keidanren Kaikan
1−3−2, Otemachi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 100-0004
Objectives :

Petroleum Association of Japan plans to hold 7th Oil Spill Workshop to discuss recent major oil spill incidents and future preparedness. Every oil spill has its own unique set of challenges dictated by either weather, location, quantity of spill, environmental considerations etc. and the recent history of incidents has proved no different. The vessel “Sanchi” spill in the East China Sea last January was extremely sad due to the loss of the 32 crew members and highlighted the special challenges presented by condensate transportation, politics and pollution. Interesting also that similar to the “Nakhodka” spill 20 years before, the vessel was not coming from or travelling to Japan. In April the oil spill and fires in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, Indonesia was especially serious as was the pollution caused by the sinking of the “Agia Zoni II” in the Saronic Gulf in Greece back in September of 2017.
Our Workshop speakers will relay their experience from being involved in some of the recent incidents both on site during the clean-up, afterwards involved in the compensation and claims procedure or improving preparedness for the next incident. They will also highlight the lessons learned and how they have used the experience gained to help improve future preparedness in their and other organizations like Petroleum Association of Japan who can learn first had from their experience.
After all presentations have been given the session will be opened to the audience of this Workshop and we welcome and encourage free discussion with each presenter to deepen and confirm understanding of the issues raised and to answer any questions that they may have.
