Objectives :

Petroleum Association of Japan plans to hold 3rd Oil Spill Workshop to discuss the consequences of the "DEEPWATER HORIZON" incident in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010.

History has shown us that large scale oil spill incidents have led both Industry and Government to introduce new regulations, technology and codes of practices to cope with the effects of the incidents to try to prevent such events or to mitigate the damage should they unfortunately happen again. Since the "DEEPWATER HORIZON" incident in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 there have been many technical and political initiatives conducted and this workshop plans to have presentations to explain these efforts and discuss their impact, effectiveness and relevance.

Every major Oil Spill incident in the past such as "TORREY CANYON" 1967, "AMOCO CADIZ" 1978, "EXXON VALDEZ" 1989, and "NAKHODKA" 1997 has brought with it many experiences we have learned from and many changes that have been made in all areas of the industry to improve the future. This year we have invited the relevant people from the responsible organizations involved in the "DEEPWATER HORIZON" incident to update us on the changes being made and illustrate & discuss what improvements are being made for the future.

After all presentations have been given the session will be opened to the audience of this Workshop for free discussion with each presenter to deepen and confirm understanding of the issues.
