Each year Petroleum Association of Japan brings new and interesting topics to the workshop to illustrate the development of response strategies based on the lessons learned from Major incidents such as “Exxon Valdez” 1987, “Gulf War Oil Spill” 1991, “Nakhodka” 1997, “Deep Water Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico” 2010. This year Petroleum Association of Japan plans to hold the 10th Oil Spill Workshop to discuss the “Latest Challenges for Major Oil Spill Response”. During the last 3 years the COVID situation has been the major focus on our daily lives and how we do our jobs. Whilst that situation is largely now under control, our focus turns to the new challenges facing our industry which is constantly trying to prevent and limit environmental damage. One of the ways we do that is by learning from the experiences of others and industry professionals in these regular workshops.
The introduction of Low Sulphur Fuel Oils has been very good for the environment in terms of reducing the air pollution, but the product has unique characteristics we need to learn about, that will enable us to understand it better in order to prepare for any future incident. Accidents in busy shipping channels also present difficult response challenges and we will hear firsthand from our speaker about their recent experience in that situation. We will also hear about recent incidents and what steps the industry is taking in this now post COVID environment to deal with the new challenges.
After all presentations have been given, the session will be opened to the audience of this Workshop for free discussion with each presenter to deepen and confirm understanding of the issues raised and to answer any questions that the audience may have.
